A Kenyan mother has become an overnight sensation and a voice for frustrated parents after a strongly-worded letter she wrote to her child’s teacher went viral on social media. The letter, which firmly states “Kila Mtu Afanye Kazi Yake” (Everyone should do their job), challenges the overwhelming amount of homework being assigned, which she argues is encroaching on family time and her child’s right to rest.

The mum eloquently outlines that the teacher’s role is to instruct during school hours, while her role as a parent is to reinforce learning in a home environment—not to spend each evening battling through excessive assignments that leave both child and parent exhausted. She emphasizes the importance of play, family bonding, and allowing a child to be a child after a long day at school.

This letter has struck a powerful chord with thousands of Kenyans online, sparking a heated debate about the modern education system, the boundaries between school and home life, and the immense pressure placed on young learners. Many are hailing her as a “hero” for boldly stating what many parents feel but are afraid to say.
