Kenya’s Finance Bill 2025 has ignited a nationwide debate, with lawmakers in parliament clashing over its controversial provisions while citizens staged protests outside key government buildings.

The bill proposes increased taxes on fuel, digital services, and essential household goods—measures the government argues are necessary to boost revenue and reduce the budget deficit. Treasury officials maintain that the reforms will help stabilize the economy, attract foreign investment, and strengthen Kenya’s credit profile.

However, critics say the tax measures will disproportionately burden ordinary citizens and small businesses already struggling with high living costs. Civil society groups and opposition leaders have organized demonstrations in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, urging parliament to reject the bill.

Inside parliament, heated exchanges highlighted deep divisions among legislators. While government-allied MPs defended the bill as a tough but necessary step, opposition members accused the administration of prioritizing debt repayment over citizens’ welfare.

The Finance Bill 2025 is set for a critical vote in the coming weeks. Its passage—or rejection—will significantly shape Kenya’s fiscal outlook and political climate heading into 2026.
