The directive mandates that universities must now focus exclusively on degree and postgraduate programs, shifting all diploma and certificate training to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

 

Hundreds in Limbo: Students currently midway through their coursework in public universities find themselves unsure if their credits will be recognized or if they will even be allowed to graduate.

 

The Senate Intervenes: Embu Senator Munyi Mundigi has formally petitioned the Ministry of Education, demanding a clear roadmap for current students and a plan for P1 teachers who need to upgrade to diplomas to remain employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

 

Standardization: The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has also initiated a massive overhaul, phasing out over 70 non-modular TVET courses by November 2025/2026 to align with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
