Standard Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich has been found safe, bringing an anxious nine-hour search to an end after he was violently abducted along the Gilgil–Nakuru Highway on Tuesday night.

Kiprotich was discovered around 2:00 AM on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, abandoned roughly 10 meters from Masinga Dam in Machakos County—over 130 kilometers from where he was intercepted. Disoriented and blindfolded, he managed to trek to a nearby homestead, where a local family provided him shelter until a recovery team led by Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita arrived at approximately 6:30 AM.

The nightmare began shortly before 9:20 PM on Tuesday as Kiprotich was traveling from the Standard Group headquarters along Mombasa Road toward Nakuru. Unknown to him, a government-plated Subaru Forester (registration KDC 125E) fitted with emergency sirens had been trailing his vehicle from Nairobi.

At the Gilgil Weighbridge, four armed, plainclothes men carrying AK-47 rifles executed an ambush. They smashed Kiprotich’s car windows with gun butts, threatened him and his driver, and forced the senior editor into their vehicle before speeding away.
