For vehicle owner Martin Maranga Nyandusi, July 23 started like any other business transaction. His two-month-old Mazda CX-5—a major investment intended to generate rental income—was handed over to a client in Kahawa Sukari off Thika Road after a referral from a fellow car hire agent in Utawala.

The client, identified as Samuel Omondi Audi, claimed he needed the vehicle for a 10-day business trip to Mombasa and agreed to pay KSh 7,000 per day. Within days, however, the agreement unravelled into a calculated car theft and a national police manhunt.

The Kitui Detour and the Silent GPS Signal
Two days into the agreement, Nyandusi checked his vehicle tracking app to monitor the CX-5’s movement. Instead of heading south toward Mombasa, the vehicle’s telemetry indicated a suspicious deviation towards Kitui and eventually onto Kangundo Road in Joska, Machakos County.

Even more alarming was that the vehicle remained completely stationary in a remote area for an extended period.

When Nyandusi dispatched a team to inspect the stationary coordinates along Kangundo Road, they did not find the Mazda CX-5. Instead, they found the vehicle’s internal GPS tracking box forcibly removed and dumped by the roadside.
DCI Links Suspect to Repeat Narcotics Charges
Upon reporting the theft to police, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) quickly identified the suspect, Samuel Omondi Audi, as a repeat offender with an ongoing court record related to narcotics trafficking.

Investigators revealed that Audi was previously arrested along the Keroka-Sotik road in March 2024 after being caught transporting illicit substances. DCI detectives suspect that Audi routinely rents private, non-commercial passenger cars under false pretexts to transport narcotics across regional police barriers without triggering routine stop-and-search inspections.

3 Fatal Mistakes Car Rental Owners Must Avoid
Martin Nyandusi’s ordeal offers critical lessons for private vehicle owners renting out their cars in Nairobi and surrounding towns:
Relying Solely on Third-Party Agent Referrals: Always physically verify the driver’s national identification card, driver’s license, and biometric details yourself—never trust middleman assurances.
Using a Single Visible GPS Device: Most vehicle thieves use wireless frequency detectors to locate installed trackers. Always conceal a secondary, battery-powered tracking unit hidden deep within the vehicle chassis.

Delaying Action When Routes Deviate: If a vehicle strays off the agreed route (e.g., heading towards Kitui instead of Mombasa), contact the client immediately and prepare to execute a remote engine kill command.
