1. A “Who’s Who” of the New Opposition

The Kitui tour, spanning April 22 and 23, features a powerful lineup of leaders who were once on opposite sides of the political divide but have now united under a single banner.

The Core Leaders: Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua are spearheading the delegation.

The Heavyweights: They are joined by Martha Karua (People’s Liberation Party), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K), Justin Muturi (Democratic Party), and Jubilee’s Fred Matiang’i.

Regional Support: Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya is also part of the team, signaling a cross-regional alliance that stretches from the Coast to the Western regions.

2. The “Ukombozi” Agenda: Fighting the Fuel Crisis

The timing of the Kitui tour is strategic. The leaders are capitalizing on the public’s frustration over the record-high fuel prices (petrol at Ksh 197.60) and the “Tarmac War” between Kenya and Tanzania.

The Message: At their first stops today, the leaders castigated President Ruto’s administration for “punishing” Kenyans with high taxes and alleged poor leadership.

The Promise: Rigathi Gachagua has promised to restore “national dignity,” while Kalonzo Musyoka has used the tour to emphasize that the opposition will name its 2027 presidential flagbearer soon—likely by the end of this year.

3. Why Kitui Matters: The Battle for the Base

Kitui is a critical stronghold for Kalonzo Musyoka, but the inclusion of Gachagua and Matiang’i is a deliberate attempt to show that the opposition is no longer regional, but a national alternative government.

Past Momentum: This visit follows a successful five-day “Ukombozi Tour” in Makueni in late March and a recent high-impact rally in Murang’a.
