A Sudden Shift in Plans

Political circles were abuzz this week with news that Rigathi Gachagua had called off a high-profile visit to the United Kingdom. While the official reason for the London trip was cited as a “private engagement,” insiders reveal that the real reason for the cancellation is much closer to home: the Ol Kalou by-election.

With the IEBC gazetting July 16, 2026, as the election date following the passing of MP David Kiaraho, Gachagua knows that Ol Kalou is more than just a seat—it is a referendum on his political survival.

Why Ol Kalou is the “Battle of the Titans”

This by-election is the first major test for Gachagua’s newly minted Democracy for the Citizens (DCP) party.

  • The UDA Threat: President Ruto’s UDA party, led by Chairperson Cecily Mbarire, has already seen ten candidates express interest.

  • The Opposition Factor: Martha Karua’s PLP and the Jubilee party are also eyeing the seat, creating a crowded field that Gachagua intends to dominate.

By staying on the ground, Gachagua is ensuring that the DCP nomination process is airtight. He is reportedly vetting candidates personally to ensure the party fields a “giant killer” capable of humiliating the ruling coalition in their backyard.

Lashing Out at the “State House Puppet”

The tension in Ol Kalou was already high during the late MP’s burial, where Gachagua publicly clashed with supporters of current DP Kithure Kindiki.

“They think they can use State House machinery to buy the souls of Nyandarua people,” Gachagua told a crowd recently. “But the Mountain knows its true leaders.”

His decision to cancel the London trip is a clear message to the “TUTAM” (Tuko UDA Tena Mapema) faction: Gachagua is not going anywhere, and he is ready to fight for every vote in the village.

The Deadlines You Need to Know

According to the IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon, political parties have until May 4, 2026, to submit the names of their primary contestants. This tight window is likely why Gachagua felt his presence in Kenya was more critical than an overseas tour.

Key Dates for the Ol Kalou By-Election:

  • May 4: Deadline for Party Primary names.

  • May 11-15: Official Party Nominations.

  • July 16: Voting Day.

The Verdict: A Test of “Mountain” Loyalty

Gachagua’s move to oversee the DCP nominations personally is a classic “Kingpin” move. He is banking on the “victim” narrative—claiming he was betrayed by Ruto—to mobilize the Nyandarua electorate. If DCP wins Ol Kalou, Gachagua will have successfully proved that he, not the government, holds the keys to Mt. Kenya.

If he loses, however, the “London trip” might become a permanent relocation.
